SINTMOL Professor Receives Award at the Brazilian Meeting on Organic Synthesis
Dr. Jamal Rafique, a Visiting Professor at the UFMS Institute of Chemistry, received the RSC/BMOS Early Career Investigator award during the 19th Brazilian Meeting on Organic Synthesis (BMOS) in Bento Gonçalves (RS). Since 2013, the event organizers and the Royal Society of Chemistry have promoted the award, which recognizes researchers from Brazil, Latin America, and the United Kingdom. Alongside Jamal, three other researchers were honored.
Dr. Jamal, originally from Pakistan, relocated to Brazil to complete his Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies in Organic Chemistry. Since 2018, he has been a visiting professor at UFMS, conducting research at the Laboratory of Synthesis and Transformations of Organic Molecules (SINTMOL), which is part of CIBSint-INQUI. Jamal noted that he identified a largely unexplored area in the Midwest related to chalcogen chemistry and molecular reductions, which inspired his research.
He views the award as recognition of his group’s work and that of UFMS, emphasizing that this is the first time a group from the region has received such a prestigious award. Jamal also praised the dedication of his students, which contributed to the group’s rapid growth. Dr. Jamal’s group currently consists of 12 members, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, who are working on the synthesis of organic molecules with potential applications in medicinal and technological chemistry.
Looking forward, Dr. Jamal anticipates increased investment, stating that the recognition should serve as motivation to continue working with even greater focus and dedication.
