The Center for Research and Innovation in Bioprospecting and Synthesis of Products for Human and Animal Health (CIBSint), affiliated with the Institute of Chemistry (INQUI) at UFMS, has successfully received approval in the PRÓ-INFRA Thematic Centers Public Call – Implementation and Improvement of Research Infrastructure to Address Challenges in Critical Thematic Areas, promoted by the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (Finep), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI).

With a global investment of roughly BRL 15 million, the project intends to develop and reinforce UFMS’s scientific and technological environment, benefiting numerous sectoral units within the organization.

“The acceptance of such a big amount in this Finep call marks a watershed moment for our research center. This outcome illustrates our researchers’ devotion and the efficacy of our strategic planning. We are proud to contribute to the advancement of research infrastructure, promoting scientific and technological development in the state and country,” says Professor Adilson Beatriz, CIBSint’s coordinator.

The approved project, titled “Center for Research and Innovation in Bioprospecting and Synthesis of Products for Human and Animal Health,” is part of the Health theme area and aims to develop innovative solutions to major challenges in the sector that directly affect human well-being.

This accomplishment was made possible by the collaborative efforts of researchers and the strategic support of UFMS’s Pro-Rectory for Research and Graduate Studies, which was instrumental in managing the internal selection process for projects through the internal call to support national thematic scientific and technological infrastructure centers (PROPP/UFMS Call No. 32/2024). It also provided assistance in developing the proposal submitted to Finep.

The final outcome of the Finep – Pro-Infra Thematic Centers call (amended) was released on December 6, 2024, marking another key step toward UFMS’s status as a research and innovation reference.

About the Project

The project aims to establish the Center for Research and Innovation in Bioprospecting and Synthesis of Products for Human and Animal Health (CIBSint) as a reference center for bioprospecting the Midwest region’s biodiversity and chemical synthesis, with the goal of finding new drug candidates and products to improve human health quality.

The specific aims include:

– Promoting scientific and technical collaboration: Encourage collaborations among researchers from various sectors and institutions by sharing natural resources, cutting-edge equipment, and infrastructure.
– Advancing Omics Sciences Research: Concentrate on Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Transcriptomics studies to develop products for precision medicine.
– Innovating in New Materials and approaches for Human Health: Create novel materials and approaches to improve human health.
– Developing New Medicines: Specifically, from the PROTAC and molecular glue families, as a precision medicine method for cancer treatment.
– Synthesizing APIs for Medications: Create innovative methods for synthesizing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) for medications such anticancer therapies, antibiotics, cardiovascular agents, and others of national importance.

By fulfilling these goals, the project hopes to establish CIBSint as a center of excellence in scientific and technical research, thereby contributing to scientific progress and increasing the population’s quality of life.
